The common painful conditions of the hand and wrist are:
Wrist sprain: This usually happens when you have a fall on your hand or while playing sports like badminton / cricket. This will cause a pain in your wrist region and maybe accompanied with swelling. This generally heals with conservative treatment consisting of splinting, ice packs and analgesics.
Trigger finger : This is a condition where your finger can bend, but occasionally locks and causes pain on attempting to straighten it actively. This happens due to inflammation of your finger flexor tendon sheath. This usually heals with analgesics and exercises for your hands and fingers; if it does not your doctor might advise you to get a steroid injection or maybe a small surgery to release the trigger finger.
Pain in your hands at multiple joints: Pain in multiple joints, which is frequently associated with swelling in the morning, is an indication of underlying autoimmune disorder like rheumatoid arthritis. Your doctor might ask you to undergo some blood tests and treat you with special anti-rheumatoid drugs.
Carpal tunnel syndrome: This occurs when your median nerve gets compressed in the wrist leading to pain in your hand as well as numbness in your hands. Your doctor will diagnose it clinically and might ask for a nerve conduction test to confirm the diagnosis. If the condition is mild, then night time wrist splints along with pain medications will help. If severe, then you might need surgery to relieve your pain.
DeQuervain tenosynovitis: This condition causes pain in the wrist region at the base of your thumb. This occurs due to inflammation of your thumb tendon sheaths. In mild cases, thumb splinting and exercises and analgesics are sufficient. In severe cases, a steroid injection or surgery might be needed.
