PARTIAL (UNICONDYLAR) KNEE REPLACEMENT (UKR)
A partial knee replacement is done when the inner (medial) compartment of your knee is damaged with an intact ACL ligament. This condition is called antero-medial osteoarthritis. This is advised to patients who have chronic knee pain with limited mobility with damage only in the inner knee. The damaged compartment is removed and replaced with an artificial knee prosthesis.
FAQs:
How is it different from a total knee replacement? -
In total knee knee replacement, 2 or 3 parts of the knee joint are replaced while in UKR it is only the inner (medial) compartment which is replaced.
2. What are the advantages over total knee replacement? -
Since the incision is smaller and less bone is cut, the recovery is faster as compared to a TKR with lesser surgical morbidity.
3. Which patients are advised to not undergo this surgery? -
Patients with post-traumatic arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis are strongly advised to not undergo this surgery.
4. What are the risks of the surgery? -
Infection, blood clots (DVT), loosening, nerve or vessel damage are the risks of knee replacement.
5. How many days stay is needed in the hospital post-surgery? -
Usually two day stay post surgery is needed.
